Blue Goose Pea is an unusual heirloom pea grown for its attractive blue-green seeds and good old-fashioned pea flavor. The vigorous vines produce pods that can be harvested young for fresh shelling peas or allowed to fully mature and dry for soup peas and seed saving. As the peas mature, the seeds develop their distinctive dusky blue to blue-green coloring, making this variety especially interesting for heirloom and homestead gardens.
Like other cool-season peas, Blue Goose grows best in the cool weather of early spring or fall. Plant in full sun in well-drained, fertile soil and provide a trellis or other support for the climbing vines. For the sweetest peas, harvest while the pods are still plump and tender; for dry peas, leave the pods on the vines until they are fully mature and beginning to dry.
These seeds where grown right here on our homestead.
20 seeds | Days to maturity: approximately 65–75 days for fresh peas, with additional time needed if growing them for fully dried peas.
