Curly Leaf Virus vs. Curly Top Virus in Tomatoes: What Causes Them, How to Tell the Difference, and Can You Save the Plant?

Few things are more frustrating than walking into the garden and finding a tomato plant that looked healthy a week ago suddenly curling, yellowing, stunting, or simply refusing to grow.

The first thing many gardeners say is:

“My tomatoes have blight.”

But curled tomato leaves are not necessarily blight.

In fact, two completely different viral diseases can cause tomato plants to become curled, yellow, stunted, and unproductive:

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus, often casually called curly leaf virus.

And:

Beet curly top virus, usually called curly top.

These diseases are sometimes confused with each other, and both are frequently confused with fungal diseases, heat stress, watering problems, herbicide damage, nutrient deficiencies, or physiological leaf curl.

They are not all the same problem.

Understanding the difference is important because once a tomato plant is infected with a true plant virus, there is generally no spray, fertilizer, fungicide, or home remedy that will remove that virus from the plant.

The key becomes recognizing what you are dealing with, reducing the chance of spread, and learning how to protect future crops.

Let’s take a deeper look at what curly leaf virus and curly top actually are.


First: Curled Tomato Leaves Do Not Automatically Mean Virus

Before assuming your tomato has a virus, remember something very important:

Leaf curl is a symptom. It is not a diagnosis.

Tomato leaves can curl because of:

  • Extreme heat

  • Water stress

  • Root damage

  • Heavy pruning

  • Transplant shock

  • Excess nitrogen

  • Herbicide drift

  • Broad mites or other pests

  • Physiological leaf roll

  • Viral disease

That means a curled leaf by itself does not tell you what is wrong.

You have to look at the entire plant.

Is the plant still growing vigorously?

Are the new leaves becoming smaller and distorted?

Is there yellowing?

Are the veins turning purple?

Has the plant stopped growing?

Are flowers dropping?

Is the plant producing fruit?

Did the symptoms suddenly appear after spraying herbicide nearby?

Are neighboring plants affected?

Those clues help separate environmental stress from a true viral infection.


What Is Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus?

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus, commonly abbreviated TYLCV, is a viral disease that primarily affects tomatoes and some related host plants.

It belongs to a group of plant viruses known as begomoviruses.

The virus itself does not fly from plant to plant.

It needs a carrier.

The primary carrier, or vector, is the whitefly, particularly the sweetpotato or silverleaf whitefly complex, Bemisia tabaci.

The whitefly feeds on an infected plant, acquires the virus, and can later transmit it when feeding on another susceptible plant.

This is one of the most important things to understand about TYLCV:

The whitefly spreads the disease.

You cannot stop the virus by spraying a fungicide because the disease is not fungal.

And once the virus is established inside the plant, killing the whiteflies does not cure the plant that is already infected.

Whitefly management is mainly about reducing future transmission.

Symptoms of Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus

TYLCV often affects the newest growth most dramatically.

You may notice:

  • Small leaves

  • Upward curling or cupping

  • Yellowing around leaf margins

  • Yellowing between veins

  • Shortened spaces between leaves

  • A compact or bushy appearance

  • Stunted plant growth

  • Reduced flowering

  • Flower drop

  • Poor fruit set

  • Very low yields

One important clue is what happens to the new growth.

A plant with simple heat-related physiological leaf roll may have curled older leaves but continue producing normal-looking new growth.

A plant severely affected by TYLCV often produces increasingly abnormal new growth.

The upper portion of the plant may look tight, yellowed, curled, and compressed.

If infection occurs while the tomato is young, the plant may never develop normally.

It may remain severely stunted and produce little or no usable crop.

If infection occurs later, after the plant has already set fruit, the outcome may be less dramatic.

Existing fruit may continue developing, although future production can decline considerably.


What Is Beet Curly Top Virus?

Curly top is a different disease.

It is not the same virus as Tomato yellow leaf curl virus.

Curly top is caused by viruses in the curly top virus group, commonly discussed under the name Beet curly top virus, or BCTV.

Despite the word “beet” in the name, the virus can infect a very wide range of plants.

Tomatoes are particularly susceptible.

Curly top can also affect crops and weeds including:

  • Beets

  • Tomatoes

  • Peppers

  • Beans

  • Spinach

  • Cucurbits

  • Many broadleaf weeds

The primary insect vector is not a whitefly.

It is the beet leafhopper, Circulifer tenellus.

That difference is extremely important.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus:

Spread primarily by whiteflies.

Curly top virus:

Spread primarily by the beet leafhopper.

These are two different virus-vector systems.

How Does Curly Top Spread?

The beet leafhopper feeds on infected plants, often weeds or native vegetation.

It acquires the virus and later feeds on susceptible garden plants.

During feeding, it can transmit the virus into the plant.

One of the reasons curly top is so frustrating is that you may rarely see the insect responsible.

The leafhopper may land on a tomato plant, feed, transmit the virus, and move on.

By the time symptoms develop, the insect that infected the plant may be long gone.

This is why gardeners sometimes say:

“I checked the plant and there are no bugs on it.”

That does not rule out curly top.

The insect does not need to remain on the tomato plant for the disease to develop.


Symptoms of Curly Top Virus in Tomatoes

Curly top symptoms can vary depending on tomato variety, plant age, weather, and how early infection occurred.

Common symptoms include:

  • Severe stunting

  • Leaves curling upward

  • Thickened or leathery leaves

  • Small leaves

  • Abnormal new growth

  • Yellowing

  • Purple or purplish veins, especially on the undersides of leaves

  • Thickened veins

  • Stiff plant growth

  • Reduced flowering

  • Poor fruit set

  • Small fruit

  • Premature ripening of existing fruit

A plant infected early may remain dramatically smaller than the healthy plants beside it.

The leaves can become thick, stiff, and curled.

One characteristic sometimes associated with curly top is a purplish discoloration of veins or foliage.

That does not occur in every case, but when combined with severe stunting and upward curling, it can be an important clue.


Curly Leaf Virus vs. Curly Top: What Is the Difference?

Although both diseases can cause curled leaves and poor production, they are not the same.

Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus

Main vector:

Whiteflies

Common symptoms:

Yellowing, small leaves, upward curling, shortened internodes, bushy or compact growth, severe stunting, flower drop, and poor fruit production.

Often most obvious in:

New growth


Beet Curly Top Virus

Main vector:

Beet leafhoppers

Common symptoms:

Upward leaf curling, severe stunting, thickened or leathery leaves, abnormal growth, sometimes purple veins, reduced fruit production, and premature ripening.

Often associated with:

Leafhopper migration from surrounding weeds, rangeland, and unmanaged vegetation.


Is Curly Top the Same as Blight?

No.

Curly top is not blight.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus is not blight either.

The word “blight” is often used very loosely to describe any tomato plant that suddenly looks sick.

But in plant pathology, blight generally refers to rapid tissue damage caused by certain pathogens, commonly fungi or fungus-like organisms and sometimes bacteria.

Two well-known tomato blights are:

Early blight

Usually associated with Alternaria fungi.

Symptoms often begin on older leaves and may include brown spots with concentric rings that resemble a target.

Late blight

Caused by Phytophthora infestans.

It can cause rapidly developing dark, water-soaked lesions on leaves, stems, and fruit.

Neither of those is the same as curly top or tomato yellow leaf curl virus.

A fungicide may play a role in managing certain fungal diseases.

A fungicide will not cure a viral disease.

That distinction matters.


Why Are Some Years Much Worse for Curly Top Than Others?

This is one of the most interesting things about curly top.

You may grow tomatoes for years with very little trouble and then suddenly have a season when multiple plants become infected.

The reason often has more to do with the leafhopper population and its movement than with anything you did wrong in the garden.

Beet leafhoppers live and reproduce on many weeds and wild plants outside the vegetable garden.

Weather conditions can dramatically affect those host plants.

A season with favorable winter or spring moisture may produce abundant weed growth.

That vegetation can support larger populations of leafhoppers.

Then conditions change.

The weeds begin drying down.

Food becomes scarce.

Leafhoppers migrate.

They begin moving into irrigated landscapes, farms, gardens, and other green areas.

Your lush tomato garden can suddenly become an attractive feeding site in an otherwise drying landscape.

That is one reason some years can be dramatically worse than others.

Regional outbreaks may be influenced by:

  • Winter rainfall

  • Spring rainfall

  • Weed growth

  • Timing of weed dry-down

  • Temperature

  • Leafhopper population size

  • Migration patterns

  • Wind

  • Availability of alternate host plants

In dry western regions, this cycle can be especially noticeable.

A wet period can create large amounts of host vegetation.

When the landscape later becomes hot and dry, insects move toward irrigated green areas.

Why Are Some Years Worse for Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus?

TYLCV severity also changes from year to year, but the dynamics are different because whiteflies are the main vector.

Conditions that favor large whitefly populations can increase disease pressure.

These may include:

  • Warm weather

  • Mild winters in some regions

  • Large populations of infected host plants

  • Heavy weed pressure

  • Nearby infected crops

  • Continuous tomato production

  • Greenhouse or protected environments where whiteflies survive

  • Movement of infected plant material

If whiteflies are abundant and infected plants are present nearby, virus transmission can increase rapidly.

Weather therefore affects not only the tomato plant but also the insect populations responsible for moving disease.


Why Does One Tomato Get Curly Top While the Plant Beside It Looks Fine?

This confuses gardeners all the time.

You may have ten tomato plants in the same bed.

One becomes severely infected.

The plant 18 inches away remains perfectly healthy.

That is entirely possible.

Curly top does not necessarily spread evenly from plant to plant.

The beet leafhopper may land on one plant, feed, transmit the virus, and fly away.

The next plant may never be fed upon by an infected leafhopper.

This can create a scattered pattern.

You may see:

Healthy plant.

Healthy plant.

Sick plant.

Healthy plant.

Sick plant.

That scattered distribution is often different from some soilborne or foliar diseases that gradually spread through an area.


Does Curly Top Spread From Tomato Plant to Tomato Plant?

Not in the way many gardeners imagine.

A curly-top-infected tomato plant does not normally infect its neighboring tomato simply because their leaves touch.

The virus needs its insect vector.

The beet leafhopper acquires the virus from infected host plants and transmits it while feeding.

This is why removing an infected plant is not the same as removing a fungal spore source.

However, infected plants can potentially serve as virus reservoirs for insect vectors, so removing severely infected plants is still generally recommended.


Does Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus Spread by Touching Plants?

TYLCV is primarily spread by its whitefly vector rather than normal garden contact between plants.

Pruning a plant and brushing against another tomato is not considered the main transmission route in the way some mechanically transmitted plant viruses spread.

Whitefly management and removal of infected host plants are therefore much more important.


Is There a Cure for Curly Top?

Unfortunately, no.

Once Beet curly top virus becomes established inside a tomato plant, there is no spray that removes the virus from the plant.

You cannot cure it with:

  • Fungicide

  • Copper

  • Baking soda

  • Neem oil

  • Fertilizer

  • Compost tea

  • Epsom salt

  • Calcium

  • Insecticide

Those treatments may affect other conditions, but they do not eliminate a systemic viral infection.

The virus is inside the plant.


Is There a Cure for Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus?

Again, there is no practical cure for an already infected plant.

Once the virus becomes systemic, you cannot spray something onto the leaves and remove it.

The emphasis must be on:

  • Prevention

  • Vector management

  • Resistant or tolerant varieties where available

  • Removing infection sources

  • Starting with healthy plants


Can an Infected Tomato Plant Recover?

This depends partly on what we mean by “recover.”

A plant infected with a virus does not normally become virus-free.

However, symptoms and productivity may vary.

A plant infected very late in the season may already have a substantial crop developing.

In that case, some existing tomatoes may continue ripening.

A plant infected very young may become so severely stunted that keeping it is not worthwhile.

Curly top can sometimes produce especially dramatic early-season stunting.

If a young tomato plant stops growing, becomes severely curled and thickened, and is clearly declining, replacing it may be more productive than waiting for it to recover.

The decision may depend on:

  • How early infection occurred

  • How severe symptoms are

  • Whether fruit has already set

  • How much growing season remains

  • Disease pressure in your area


Should You Remove an Infected Plant?

Generally, a severely infected plant should be removed.

Do not wait months for a badly stunted young tomato to suddenly become healthy.

Removal is especially important with TYLCV because infected host plants can contribute to a local source of virus for whiteflies.

With curly top, removing infected plants also eliminates a potential infected host.

If you are unsure whether the plant actually has a virus, however, diagnose carefully before pulling it.

Heat stress and physiological leaf roll can look alarming but do not require destroying the plant.


Can You Compost Plants With Curly Top?

The main way curly top spreads is through its leafhopper vector, not through finished compost.

However, I generally prefer not to put actively diseased plant material into a casual, cool backyard compost pile.

If the pile does not heat properly or plant material remains alive for a period of time, you gain very little by keeping a severely infected plant around.

Bagging or otherwise disposing of severely diseased plants according to local recommendations is often the simpler choice.

Do not leave infected living plants lying beside the garden where insects can continue feeding on them.


Can You Prevent Curly Top Virus?

You cannot guarantee complete prevention, especially in areas with heavy beet leafhopper pressure.

But you can reduce risk.

1. Protect Young Plants

Young tomato plants are particularly vulnerable because early infection can destroy most of the season’s potential production.

Fine insect netting or lightweight row-cover systems may help reduce insect access while plants are young.

However, the covering must physically exclude the leafhopper.

Once plants require pollination or outgrow the protection, management becomes more complicated.

Tomatoes are self-pollinating, so pollinator access is not as essential as it is for squash, but heat buildup under coverings must be considered.


2. Use Shade Strategically

Some gardeners in curly top-prone regions have observed lower disease incidence when plants are partially shaded.

One explanation is that beet leafhoppers may preferentially land on plants that are more exposed and brightly lit.

Research and recommendations on shade as a management tool can vary by region, so I would treat it as one piece of an integrated strategy rather than a guarantee.

Shade cloth can also help tomatoes tolerate extreme summer heat.


3. Manage Weeds

Weeds can be important virus and insect reservoirs.

However, timing matters.

Simply clearing every weed in the surrounding landscape does not automatically solve the problem.

In some situations, when large areas of host weeds suddenly dry down or are removed, leafhoppers move elsewhere looking for green plants.

Keep your garden and immediate growing area managed, but understand that leafhoppers may migrate from a much larger surrounding landscape.

You may not be able to control what is happening acres away.


4. Keep Plants Healthy

A healthy plant is not immune to curly top.

A beet leafhopper can still transmit the virus.

But reducing other stresses helps your tomatoes perform as well as possible.

Provide:

  • Consistent watering

  • Healthy soil

  • Appropriate fertility

  • Mulch

  • Good root development

Do not mistake healthy plant care for immunity, however.

You cannot fertilize a plant into becoming resistant to a virus.


Can Insecticides Prevent Curly Top?

This is where expectations need to be realistic.

Trying to spray your way out of curly top is usually disappointing.

The beet leafhopper may transmit the virus during feeding and then quickly leave the plant.

By the time an insecticide kills the insect, transmission may already have occurred.

Leafhoppers are also highly mobile.

They can continually move into the garden from outside areas.

Therefore, insecticides aimed at garden plants alone may not reliably prevent curly top.

This is one reason physical exclusion of young plants can sometimes be more useful than trying to kill every leafhopper after it lands.

Can You Prevent Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus?

TYLCV prevention focuses heavily on whitefly management.

1. Start With Healthy Plants

Avoid bringing visibly infected tomato transplants into the garden.

Inspect purchased plants carefully.

Look for:

  • Whiteflies

  • Yellowed new growth

  • Curling

  • Abnormally small leaves

  • Stunting

A single infected plant can become part of a local virus reservoir.


2. Control Whitefly Host Plants

Remove volunteer tomatoes and unmanaged host plants where appropriate.

Whiteflies can survive and reproduce on many plants.

Managing weeds and old crop residue can help reduce places for both whiteflies and viruses to persist.


3. Use Resistant or Tolerant Tomato Varieties

This can be one of the most effective strategies in regions where TYLCV is common.

Some tomato varieties have been bred with resistance or tolerance to Tomato yellow leaf curl virus.

Look at seed descriptions carefully.

You may see TYLCV resistance listed in disease-resistance codes.

Resistance does not necessarily mean the plant can never become infected.

It means the variety may perform significantly better under disease pressure.


4. Use Insect Exclusion

Fine insect netting can help protect young plants from whiteflies.

This is especially useful during early establishment.

Make sure there are no whiteflies trapped inside before sealing the crop.


5. Consider Reflective Mulches

Reflective or silver-colored mulches have sometimes been used to reduce the landing of whiteflies and other flying insect vectors on young vegetable crops.

Their usefulness depends on climate, crop system, and scale, but they can be part of an integrated pest-management program.


6. Manage Whiteflies Early

If whitefly populations become enormous, controlling them becomes much more difficult.

Monitor the undersides of leaves.

Look for adults, nymphs, and sticky honeydew.

Use an integrated pest-management approach rather than repeatedly spraying broad-spectrum insecticides.

Broad-spectrum sprays can kill beneficial insects and sometimes make pest problems worse by disrupting natural predator populations.


Why Spraying After You See Symptoms Is Often Too Late

With vector-transmitted viruses, there is often a delay between infection and visible symptoms.

The insect may transmit the virus today.

The plant may not look sick immediately.

Days or even weeks later, symptoms become obvious.

By then, spraying the insect that originally infected the plant accomplishes nothing.

That insect may already be gone.

This is why viral disease management emphasizes prevention.


What About Seeds From an Infected Tomato?

Neither curly top nor TYLCV is generally managed primarily as a seedborne tomato disease.

Their major epidemiological importance comes from insect vectors.

Still, if a plant is severely diseased and producing poor-quality fruit, I generally would not choose that plant as my best seed-saving candidate.

For seed saving, select vigorous, healthy, true-to-type plants with desirable characteristics.


Could Herbicide Damage Look Like Curly Top?

Absolutely.

This is one of the most important misdiagnoses.

Tomatoes are extremely sensitive to certain herbicides.

Herbicide drift or contaminated compost, manure, straw, or hay can cause:

  • Twisted leaves

  • Narrow leaves

  • Cupping

  • Fern-like growth

  • Distorted new growth

  • Stunting

This can look very much like viral disease.

A major clue is the pattern.

If many different susceptible broadleaf plants across the garden suddenly develop distorted growth at the same time, consider herbicide exposure.

Curly top may appear more randomly because individual plants are infected by migrating leafhoppers.


Could Heat Cause Tomato Leaves to Curl?

Yes.

Physiological leaf roll is common in tomatoes during hot weather.

Leaves may roll or curl upward, especially older leaves.

This can happen because of:

  • High heat

  • Dry soil

  • Heavy pruning

  • Root disturbance

  • Rapid weather changes

  • Excessive moisture followed by drought

The important difference is that the plant often continues growing.

New leaves may look normal.

Flowers continue developing.

The plant may continue producing fruit.

Physiological leaf roll can look dramatic without being a contagious disease.


How to Tell Physiological Leaf Curl From Virus

Ask these questions:

Is the plant still growing normally?

If yes, environmental stress is more likely.

Are mainly older leaves rolling?

That often points toward physiological leaf roll.

Is new growth becoming tiny, yellow, distorted, and severely stunted?

Virus becomes more concerning.

Are veins thickened or purple and the plant extremely stiff and stunted?

Curly top becomes more likely.

Are there whiteflies and yellow, curled, compact new growth?

TYLCV becomes more likely.

Did many plants suddenly distort after herbicide use nearby?

Investigate herbicide injury.

Diagnosis should always consider the entire pattern.


Does Curly Top Stay in the Soil?

This is another common misconception.

Curly top is not generally considered a soilborne tomato disease.

Removing a curly-top-infected tomato does not mean that spot in the soil is permanently contaminated.

The virus is primarily maintained in living host plants and transmitted by leafhoppers.

You can usually replant in that location.

The larger concern is whether infected leafhoppers are still moving through the area.


Does Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus Stay in the Soil?

TYLCV is also not primarily a soilborne disease.

Its main spread is through infected host plants and whitefly vectors.

Replacing the soil will not solve a regional whitefly-transmitted virus problem.

That money and effort are better directed toward:

  • Vector management

  • Healthy transplants

  • Resistant varieties

  • Sanitation

  • Insect exclusion


Why Understanding the Vector Changes Everything

The easiest way to remember the difference is:

Curly Top

Think leafhopper.

The beet leafhopper moves through the landscape and can transmit the virus during feeding.

Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl

Think whitefly.

Whiteflies acquire the virus from infected host plants and transmit it to susceptible tomatoes.

Once you understand the vector, the prevention strategy makes much more sense.


What Should You Do When You Find a Suspected Infected Tomato?

First, do not panic.

Look closely at the symptoms.

Inspect the plant for whiteflies.

Look at neighboring plants.

Think about recent weather.

Think about herbicide use.

Look at the new growth.

Then decide whether the plant is truly declining.

If the plant is severely stunted and symptoms strongly suggest viral disease:

Remove it.

Control relevant insect vectors as much as practical.

Remove obvious nearby host weeds or volunteer tomatoes where appropriate.

Protect remaining young plants when possible.

Do not continually apply fungicide to a virus-infected plant expecting a cure.


The Most Important Thing to Remember

Curly leaves do not always mean curly top.

And curly top is not blight.

Tomatoes can develop curled leaves for many reasons.

But when a plant becomes severely stunted, new growth becomes abnormal, flowers stop developing, and production collapses, a viral disease should be considered.

The two important viral diseases discussed here are very different:

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus is primarily spread by whiteflies.

Curly top is primarily spread by beet leafhoppers.

Neither has a practical cure once the plant is systemically infected.

That makes prevention, early recognition, vector management, and choosing the right varieties extremely important.

And perhaps most importantly, do not blame yourself when curly top suddenly appears.

Some years are simply worse.

Rainfall, weed growth, insect populations, migration patterns, and weather can create the perfect conditions for a heavy disease year.

You can do everything right and still have a leafhopper fly into the garden and infect a tomato.

The goal is not to create a garden where no problem ever occurs.

The goal is to understand what you are seeing early enough to make the best decision for the rest of the garden.

A Final Note About Diagnosis

It can be very difficult to diagnose a tomato virus based only on one curled leaf or even a photograph.

Several problems can mimic one another.

When diagnosis really matters, especially for commercial growers or when many plants are affected, laboratory testing through a plant diagnostic clinic or Cooperative Extension service is the most reliable way to confirm which virus is present.

For the home gardener, the best place to begin is with the pattern:

Which leaves are affected?

Is the plant still growing?

Is there yellowing or severe stunting?

Are whiteflies present?

Is the problem scattered among otherwise healthy plants?

Those clues can tell you far more than simply looking at a curled leaf and calling it “blight.”
