Nutrients for the Garden - Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur

Posted January 03, 2020

We pay much attention to N-P-K, but there are other key nutrients that are needed for overall plant health. Soil test results may come with recommendations for adding the following trace minerals to the soil if they are found to be deficient.  These can be done at many plant nurseries or your County Extension Services.

  • Calcium (Ca) improves general plant vigor and promotes the growth of young roots and shoots. Bone Meal, Cal-phos, Oyster Shell and Liquid Calcium contain calcium.
  • Magnesium (Mg) regulates the nutrient uptake, aids in seed formation, and contributes to the dark green color of leaves, which is important for photosynthesis. Dolomite contains magnesium.
  • Sulfur (S) helps to maintain leaves’ dark green color, encouraging vigorous plant growth. Gypsum is an examples of sulfur nutrient.
